State Rep. Ken Borton today led the way on a House subcommittee budget vote that prioritizes the rights of sportsmen in the state of Michigan.
Borton, who serves as chair of the Agriculture and Rural Development and Natural Resources subcommittee, presented a funding plan for the Department of Natural Resources that protects hunters while reigning in unnecessary state spending.
“I’m proud of the work that we’re doing,” said Borton (R-Gaylord). “We’ve developed a plan that puts Michiganders first while cutting government waste. We need to make the most of the resources we already have.”
Borton went on to criticize financial barriers to sportsman activities. Earlier this year, the governor put forward a proposal to raise the cost of Michigan hunting and fishing licenses to increase DNR funding, which House Republicans firmly rejected in the budget.
“It’s outrageous,” Borton said. “Increasing the cost of hunting licenses will lower Michigan’s already declining number of hunters. Instead of taxing people for enjoying the outdoors, we need to be directing our existing state resources to ensure that our departments are being properly managed. We have a responsibility to provide oversight, and we are going to deliver for the people of Michigan.”
