State Rep. Ken Borton today celebrated the successful Senate vote on legislation that would excuse school days cancelled across Northern Michigan due to severe storms that occurred in March.
“I’m glad to see this bill make it through and move one step closer to becoming law,” said Borton (R-Gaylord). “Communities across our region were hit hard, and this vote shows that lawmakers understand the challenges families and schools faced during these historic weather events.”
House Bill 5797, introduced by Rep. Parker Fairbairn, allows a limited number of school districts across the state to waive four additional school days that were cancelled due to the storms. The days for excusal could only apply to the dates of March 12, 13, 16, and 17.
“This Senate vote is an important step toward doing right by the members of our communities,” Borton said. “I’m glad the Legislature came together to support our families. Schools were dealing with horrific weather conditions, and this vote helps ensure families won’t continue feeling the effects of those storms months later.”
The bill now heads to Gov. Whitmer for final approval.
