Rep. Frederick: Saginaw County recreation project gains approval from House
RELEASE|March 30, 2021

State Rep. Ben Frederick and the Michigan House recently approved funding to expand a township park in Saginaw County’s Maple Grove Township.

Frederick, of Owosso, said a measure advancing through the Legislature provides $23,100 to expand Maple Grove Township Park in Saginaw County. The township plans to use the funds to purchase property that will add four acres to the popular township park located near the corner of Ferden and Lincoln roads.

“This park offers a great place for people in the community to gather with their families, enjoy the playground, and exercise on the ball fields,” Frederick said. “This expansion will open it up to even more opportunities.”

The project is included in annual recommendations from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund. The recommendations were made in December to the Legislature, which is working to finalize and authorize the plan.

Statewide, the measure approved by the House provides $37.8 million for 46 recreational development projects and 30 land acquisition projects.

Money in the Natural Resources Trust Fund comes from the development of minerals on state land – not general tax money – and is distributed on an annual basis in partnership with local governments. The money must be used for acquisition or recreational development projects, according to the Michigan Constitution.

The Natural Resources Trust Fund program dates back to the 1970s.

House Bill 4469 remains under consideration by the Senate.
