State Rep. Parker Fairbairn today welcomed the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s (EGLE) decision to reissue a key permit for the proposed Great Lakes Tunnel project, calling it an important step forward for Northern Michigan while noting that additional approvals are still needed before construction can begin. 

“EGLE’s decision is an important step forward, but there is still work to be done before this project crosses the finish line,” said Fairbairn, R-Harbor Springs. “Line 5 is a vital part of Michigan’s energy infrastructure, particularly for Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Moving this section of the pipeline into a tunnel hundreds of feet beneath the Straits significantly strengthens environmental protections while helping ensure Michigan homes, businesses and refineries continue to have access to reliable, affordable energy. I look forward to seeing the remaining state and federal approvals completed so this project can move forward.”  

The Great Lakes Tunnel project would relocate a four-mile section of the existing Line 5 pipeline into a concrete-lined tunnel, bored through bedrock, 250 feet beneath the lakebed of Mackinac. The project is designed to enhance environmental protection while allowing the continued transportation of the energy products that millions of Michigan residents rely on each day for heating homes, fueling vehicles, and supporting businesses. 

In addition to protecting Michigan’s energy infrastructure, the tunnel project is expected to support construction jobs, generate long-term economic activity, and continue providing tax revenue to local communities. Fairbairn said modernizing the crossing beneath the Straits offers a safer long-term solution while maintaining a critical piece of the state’s energy network. 

Fairbairn said he will continue working with state and federal officials to ensure the project advances while protecting both Michigan’s natural resources and the affordable energy that residents need.
