Rep. Damoose urges Northern Michigan residents to share concerns about ‘endless emergency rules’
RELEASE|May 11, 2021

Affected residents can provide comment through new webpage

State Rep. John Damoose today invited Northern Michigan residents to share their concerns about permanent COVID-19 workplace rules proposed by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA).

Michigan citizens can provide public comment to MIOSHA through a new form online at gophouse.org/WhitmerEmergency.

“Gov. Whitmer recently announced a plan for reopening, but the agencies she runs are acting as if nothing is going to change,” said Damoose, of Harbor Springs. “The people in Northern Michigan and across our great state have had enough of endless emergency rules that handicap business and hurt workers.”

MIOSHA stated in an official filing that the current emergency rules should be extended because “Michigan’s experience with COVID-19 demonstrates that the disease can spread rapidly without protective measures in place.” The proposed rules would indefinitely extend pandemic-related restrictions on Michigan businesses, including facemask mandates for employees and customers, social distancing requirements, and a limit on in-person work to the extent that work activities can be feasibly completed remotely.

If MIOSHA places the proposed permanent rules into effect, they could remain effective even after any epidemic orders are rescinded by the health department.

MIOSHA will hold a public hearing about the proposal on May 26. All public comments should be submitted online by May 26 at 5 p.m.
